Arc Defender 40
40 cal/cm² ELIM Protection,
440 g/m² Total Fabric System.

An innovative textile architecture that eliminates the bulky, non-breathable 600+ g/m² multi-layer burden of conventional high-calorie arc flash suits. Arc Defender 40 (Model SMY2044) delivers a verified garment-level ELIM = 40 cal/cm² threshold and fabric-level ATPV = 49 cal/cm² thermal performance in a 440 g/m² two-layer inherent aramid construction.

Verified Engineering Fact: 440 g/m² represents the areal density of the Dual-Layer Micro-Air-Gap Fabric System (225 g/m² rip-stop aramid outer shell + 215 g/m² breathable aramid inner thermal barrier), not the gross weight of the assembled garment. The ELIM metric defines the conservative incident energy limit with a 0% probability of reaching the Stoll second-degree burn threshold (Fabric ATPV = 49 cal/cm², Finished Garment ELIM & ATPV = 40 cal/cm²).

Why You Don't Have to Carry 600+ g/m² for 40 cal Protection

During an electric arc flash event, extreme thermal energy propagates in tenths of a second, testing both the inherent flame resistance of fabric layers and their capacity to block radiant and convective heat flux. Conventional designs simply stack heavy layers, escalating heat stress and restricting operator mobility to dangerous levels.

01. VERIFIED ELIM RATING (40 cal/cm²)

Zero-Burn Threshold, Not 50% Probability

Under the EN IEC 61482-1-1 open-arc method, the dual-layer fabric system achieves ATPV = 49 cal/cm², while the finished Arc Defender 40 garment—including storm flaps and structural seams—is certified at ELIM = 40 cal/cm² (Garment ATPV = 40 cal/cm²). ELIM is the strict boundary where the probability of thermal energy exceeding the Stoll burn curve is 0%.

02. DUAL-LAYER MICRO-AIR-GAP ARCHITECTURE (440 g/m²)

Lightweight & Breathable Dual-Layer Architecture

Instead of coarse batting fillers, Arc Defender 40 utilizes two independent inherent aramid layers: a 225 g/m² rip-stop aramid outer shell deflects arc plasma and resists fabric break-open, while the micro-air cushion and 215 g/m² breathable aramid inner thermal barrier interrupt heat flux before it reaches the skin.

03. BOX TEST, HEAT/FLAME & ELECTROSTATIC SAFETY

Multi-Hazard Heat, Flame & Antistatic Protection

Meets the highest protection class—APC 2 (7 kA, 0.5 s)—in the EN 61482-1-2 box test across both fabric and finished garment levels, while delivering certified multi-norm heat/flame resistance and permanent electrostatic discharge protection.

Dual-Layer Aramid Engineering Against Electric Arc Flash

The lightweight profile of Arc Defender 40 is no coincidence. Validated across accredited AITEX test reports, the Dual-Layer Micro-Air-Gap Fabric System pairs a 225 g/m² rip-stop aramid outer shell that blocks arc plasma and deflects flame with a 215 g/m² breathable aramid inner thermal barrier and micro-air buffer that attenuate convective and radiant heat flux.

Complete PPE Ensemble, Natural Base-Layer Rule & Field Audits

An arc-rated jacket or trouser alone does not provide full-body protection. Arc Defender 40 (ELIM 40 cal/cm²) forms an unbroken protective chain alongside a GS-ET-29 Class 2 (APC 2) full arc flash hood and visor for the head/neck, EN 60903 dielectric insulating gloves + ArSafe APC 2 (125.3 cal/cm²) arc flash gloves for the hands, EN ISO 20345 dielectric/thermally insulated safety boots, and a 100% Cotton or Natural FR Base Layer.

Critical Base Layer & Electrical Insulation Warning: Synthetic undergarments (polyester, polypropylene, nylon, elastane) must never be worn beneath arc flash suits, as they melt and fuse onto skin under arc heat; wear only 100% Cotton, Wool, or Natural FR base layers. Arc Defender 40 protects against the thermal effects of an electric arc flash and does not provide dielectric insulation against electric shock.
1-Year Warranty + Tri-Annual (3×/Year, Every 4 Months) On-Site Field Audits & OHS Reporting: For 1 year from delivery, our specialist engineers conduct 3 physical on-site PPE inspections at 4-month intervals—auditing seams, reflective trim, zippers/hook-and-loop closures, and surface integrity, and submitting a signed written assessment report to your OHS committee (Warranty Commitment PDF PDF · TR).
  • ✔️ The front jacket zipper must be drawn all the way up to the collar and the hook-and-loop storm flap sealed completely.
  • ✔️ Trouser cuffs must never be tucked inside boots; they must overlap the outside of the footwear with ankle straps fastened securely.
  • ✔️ Garments contaminated with grease, oil, paint, or flammable solvents must be cleaned immediately or removed from service, as hydrocarbon residues degrade flame resistance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between ELIM = 40 cal/cm² and ATPV = 49 cal/cm²? +

ATPV (Arc Thermal Performance Value) is the incident energy level at which there is a 50% probability that heat transferred through the fabric will cross the Stoll second-degree burn curve. ELIM (Incident Energy Limit), introduced under EN IEC 61482-1-1:2019, is a stricter and more conservative safety metric defining the highest thermal energy level with a 0% probability of second-degree burn or fabric break-open. The finished Arc Defender 40 garment guarantees this zero-burn threshold at 40 cal/cm², while the standalone two-layer fabric system reaches 49 cal/cm² ATPV.

What field advantage does the 440 g/m² dual-layer system provide over heavy 650+ g/m² arc flash suits? +

Conventional 40 cal/cm² arc flash suits typically rely on 3 or 4 heavy layers totaling 650–750 g/m². That excessive bulk induces severe heat stress, heavy perspiration, restricted range of motion, and physical fatigue that can compromise operator concentration. With its 440 g/m² dual-layer inherent aramid architecture (225 g/m² rip-stop outer shell + 215 g/m² breathable thermal liner), Arc Defender 40 delivers full Category III arc protection while allowing utility personnel to work with the agility and comfort of standard industrial workwear.

What is the scope and validity of the AITEX certification for this garment? +

Arc Defender SMY2044 is classified as Category III high-risk PPE under the European Union Personal Protective Equipment Regulation ((EU) 2016/425). EU Type-Examination was conducted by AITEX (Notified Body No. 0161) under Module B, issuing Certificate No. 26/10153/00/0161/B. Ongoing serial production quality assurance is audited by Universal Certification (Notified Body No. 2163) under Module D.

How should the suit be worn with a fall arrest safety harness (EN 361) when working at height? +

A full-body fall arrest harness must be worn over the Arc Defender 40 suit. The 225 g/m² rip-stop aramid outer shell is engineered to withstand heavy strap friction and abrasion under harness webbing. Furthermore, the jacket's stay-tucked extended rear hem and the trousers' articulated accordion knee panels prevent the garment from riding up or creating exposed gaps while climbing and positioning on utility poles.
